Thanks for the opportunity to clear the air in the smokies.
East Tennessee Sierra Club members are clearing the air with local grown annually renewable whole kernel shelled corn fuel in corn stoves manufactured in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Corn is safe, clean, cost effective, stable in price, smokeless,
locally available, has over 2 million local competitive American
suppliers, is consistent in BTU value, efficient and environmentally
friendly, reduces global warming by converting a net positive amount of CO2 carbon dioxide to O2 oxygen (ref www.sierraclub.org) of 484 pounds each year. Corn prices remain stable in America for 200 years with year 1817 being the highest price for corn in history.
Soy beans vary in price from $3 to $12 each year. Otherwise
soybeans in a bean stove are equal to corn in a corn stove.
Biomass has good BTU value per pound but the daily fuel volume would
fill the room to be heated.
Wood smokes and makes 50% ash. The Great Smokie Mountains we can't see for the great smoke those wood fireplaces spew.
Coal is clean (?) with millions invested, a staff of highly trained,
expert operators and the correct burner/boiler combination. Over 50% of the good clean electricity is produced by coal which accumulates 15 to 30 tons of pollution each year for each customer (Ref state of California website).
Electricity is the world's greatest polluter not to mention the
escalating price of electricity. Electricity is second only to automobiles in annual safety hazards (ref NFPA, Sep 2005 report).
Natural gas is 100 times more pollutant than corn and never again to
be the low cost American energy. (ref corn stove test report by Virginia Tech). Propane tanks are expensive bombs twice a threat.
Most energy sources including Canadian wood pellets have two to five
remote uncontrollable profit oriented suppliers.
Hydrogen is the purportedly THE perfect fuel and can be safely
transported so long as the hydrogen is locked up in a corn kernel.
The US government has a 20 year multiple Billion $ plan to figure how to
produce, safely transport, and convert hydrogen to energy. Thanks to
the American farm, corn fuel is immediately available, renewable,
safely transportable, and consist of HYDROGEN and carbon. - DUH!
Unless one just has an inherent hate for the local hard working
American farmer and falls head over hills in love with a remote
uncontrollable energy that may well be returned by a tourist DUH!
Name another heating fuel as exciting, clean, cost effective, healthy, safe as corn fuel?
How to select a corn stove:
Select an energy fuel first.
Select the heater based on fuel selection.
Although some make it work, please don't select diesel or No 2 fuel
and pour either in a gasoline engine. Likewise, why pour a more
expensive fuel in a corn stove? Such behavior reaps advantages of neither fuel and disadvantages of both fuels. Wood in a corn stove will
smoke, deposit carbon or worse, insulate the heat exchanger, and
render the corn stove ineffective by spewing the heat out the
exhaust. Likewise beans in a corn stove will deposit carbon. Sea shells are reportedly safe and clean in some corn stoves but I doubt there is much energy release from a sea shell unless the sea urchent is still home.
Consider if each is an up or down side to corn fuel and corn stoves.
1. Corn is not for the lazy, gone, anxious or excessively busy.
2. Corn is not convenient for rampant government tax revenue.
3. Corn receives no government subsidizes and no tax breaks.
4. Corn is not for the rich blooded unlimited funded remote
controlled world traveling unibomber or touring terrorist.
5. Corn is not the energy of false security or flip the switch
6. Corn fuel is not automatic. Local seed, sweat and dirt is
continuously required to produce (grow) corn fuel.
7. Corn fuel does not spew from the earth under high pressure in
foreign countries and make a few rich at the expense of many.
8. Corn fuel is produced by many and used by few.
9. Corn fuel does not spill, fill, threaten, or endanger clean
water, fresh air, fish, birds, humans or wildlife. Intentionally
feed the excess to endangered or human species.
10. Corn stoves do not contribute to the annual destruction of
500,000 homes nor take the lives of 3100 humans annually as reported
by NFPA in September 2005 as the present accepted standard for other
types of home heating systems in America alone. Katrina and Rita
combined did less damage than home heaters do every single year in
the US alone.
Hope this hurts until you switch to corn fuel.
