Our specialties:
Founded in 1915, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble that is led by Dr. David MacKenzie, well-known as the leader of Rogue Opera in Oregon, a popular guest conductor in America and abroad, as well as a dedicated music educator.
Besides its five-concert subscription series and two Pops concerts in the summer, the NBSO is also a leader in community arts education. The NBSO’s Music in the Mornings program reaches more than 10,000 elementary school students every day. The Orchestra’s Young People’s concerts bring more than 4,500 students to the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center every March for free performances, and the Orchestra’s masterclass series has given many aspiring young musicians the chance to study with the NBSO’s distinguished guest soloists.
Since 2002 the NBSO has undertaken an ambitious program of financial and artistic growth. In recent years, the NBSO has performed with noted soloists including Dave Brubeck, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Martin Chalifour, and William Preucil. In 2004 the NBSO was the subject of Making Music Matter, The Resurgence of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, by Boston Herald music critic Keith Powers, to commemorate its 90th anniversary. The 90th anniversary season also featured a world premiere commission, Sea Portraits, by noted American composer Stephen Paulus.
The NBSO performs at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center located at 684 Purchase Street. The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is a Resident Company of the Zeiterion. Parking is available adjacent to the Arts Center in the Zeiterion Garage for $2. For more information about the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra visit www.nbsymphony.org or call 508-999-6276.
