An FDIC-insured bank that exists for the sole purpose of improving the economy in the most impoverished neighborhoods of Louisville, Kentucky. The Bank is a self-sustaining institution that does not rely on public funding or grants. The Bank accomplishes its mission by making loans to new or expanding small businesses or to individuals that are rehabilitating homes or commercial properties in the inner city. The Bank's loans are funded solely through Certificates of Deposit (CDs) that have been purchased by individuals or corporations that believe in the wisdom of rebuilding inner city neighborhoods. At the same time, these investors are earning a market-rate return on their CD. To date (9/01), the Bank has made over $27 Million in loans. These loans have saved or created nearly 1,000 jobs for inner city residents. Louisville Community Development Bank is certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), one of only 39 banks in the United States to receive this certification.
