Our specialties:
Logan is a mostly rural county in southwestern West Virginia and has a
population of approximately 43,000. The county has five incorporated municipalities: Logan, Chapmanville, Man, West Logan and Mitchell Heights, with Logan--the County Seat--having the largest population of approximately 1,600.
One of the original Community Action Agencies in West Virginia, P.R.I.D.E. In
Logan County, Inc., was organized during President Johnson's War On Poverty and was authorized by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. P.R.I.D.E. stands for
Progressive Rejuvenation Improvement (and) Development Enterprise.
The agency's primary services include economic development, Head Start, senior
citizens programs, home weatherization, emergency food pantry, emergency
services, disaster assistance, family emergency assistance, and a child-care food program.
P.R.I.D.E. is a private, non-profit corporation chartered by the State of West Virginia and supervised by a board of directors whose membership consists of one-third elected officials, one-third low-income representatives and one-third community organizations (church, civic, social). It is one of the few single-county community action agencies in the Nation. Our executive director is Ervin Queen(who's been involved with the agency in some capacity since its inception), while
Linda Curry serves as deputy director as well as director of senior-citizens
programs.
Our member agencies include all civic clubs in Logan County, most service
organizations (Red Cross, Boy Scouts, etc.), all local government agencies and many churches and social clubs.
We have our own central-office building as well as a fleet of service vehicles;
operate three Head Start centers serving nearly 200 preschoolers per year; operate a “self-contained” home weatherization program for the elderly, low- to moderate-income and the handicapped; operate three senior citizens centers, providing such services as transportation and nutrition; participate in LIHEAP;
and have helped obtain numerous grants on behalf of local government agencies.
With P.R.I.D.E. serving as the lead agency for the County Commission, Logan
County was designated a “Champion Community” in 1994 following the first round of grant applications under the USDA/HUD Empowerment Zone/Enterprise
Community (EZ/EC) program.
